Sikhs attend Ranjit’s anniversary

Sikh Yatrees have termed people to people contact inevitable to improve ties between Pakistan and India. Sikh Yatrees from all over the world gathered at the Gurdwara Dera Sahab to attend 170th anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Sikh ruler who achieved the status of the then army general only at the age of nine and ruled Punjab for over 40 years. Led by the Shromini Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Bhai Mardana Society (BMS), the Yatris started the recitation of the Guru Granth 48 hours prior to the anniversary on June 27th as per the custom.
The Paat of Guru Granth ended at 11 am on Monday after which religious scholars and eminent Sikhs paid tribute to Maharaja Ranjit Singh. They commended the Sikh rulerís valor and political administration. Later, Pakistani Sikh Sangat and EPTP exchanged gifts and souvenirs with the SGPC and BMS.
Afterwards, ETPB chairman Syed Asif Hashmi served the Yatrees with dinner. He said the government has taken strict security measures at all the Sikh Gurdawaras and buildings with religious significance. He said that all minorities in Pakistan enjoyed freedom of expression and practice. SGPC chairman Baldev Singh thanked the ETPB chairman and the government for facilitating and providing fool proof security for the Yatris.
